I’m having a hard time today accepting the fact the Joe Burge is no longer with us. He was a kind man with a big, warm heart. He was Basile’s very own Renaissance Man. He was an honest working man with several interests. (Read his obituary.)
When I was running LouisianaRadio.com with my brother Shamus, I talked with Joe every morning. For years he ran his father’s grocery business in Basile, and he would call me on the phone while he sipped his can of Dr. Pepper and smoked cigarettes. We would talk about everything and nothing. He always had a joke, and he was always up for talking about music, politics, rumors, and Mid-South wrestling.
He loved a good fight, and he was always rooting for the under dog. That’s why he loved the Saints.
Nine years ago, Joe shut down his father’s store which had been in his family for 56 years. He let me hang around that day and write this story, “Thanks for the Memories.”
You’re already missed, Dr. Feelgood. Behave your damn self.
